No less than 64 Dead in Rio's Largest Police Raid on Organized Crime
At least 64 people died in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's past.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.
Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with gunfire, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "horrified" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is seen as the central command of a major criminal organizations.
State officials stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
