Explosion Claims 3 Law Enforcement Officers Amid Property Removal Operation in Italy
A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews approached the residence close to Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and a third person who fled after the blast was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.
The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the structure turned into a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.
Property Situation
The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the property was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.
Negotiators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings caused the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander told reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also located at the site, the minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a firefighter.
According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
The official thought the detonation had taken place on a level above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the explosion, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.
Community Reaction
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed Italian media, adding that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
